What a moment. I had the opportunity to film a 90 min. music special following banjo picking Earl Scruggs and his sons on the road to play with those they most admired. At the top of that list was Doc Watson. This scene was filmed with a single camera and a single microphone at Doc's home in North Carolina. To see these 2 magnificent musicians (and magnificent people) just sit down and pick some good bluegrass/country/mountain tunes was hard to sit there and film because I want to get up and move my body with their wonderful music.

This clip is a part of the 180 interviews I conducted in 1989 for my TV series, Making Sense of the Sixties. I carefully selected each person who appeared based on their ability to articulate their experiences and also based on a judgment I made–were they “ordinary extraordinary” people as I described them. I feel that this woman is clearly one. Bluntly honest. At the time, she was one of the leaders of the flight attendant's union. #hippies #1960s #womensrights #stewardess

This is a clip from my vast collection of 1950s and 1960s documentaries, news clips, and educational films. I can't quite figure out how this worked but at the time, this was “news”. I use portions of my collection in my documentaries and this clip just never fit as an in take - so I kept it as an out take.

My subscribers and other amateur and professional videographers regularly ask me about my rig. This is a short film I made about one of the best camera and audio rigs I use. I love the GoPro for this purpose. With the proper microphone attached, it becomes a more than acceptable documentary recording device for home videos or for professionals. I have made a PBS documentary using this rig so it met TV production standards. I hope this tutorial is of help to you.
