The Hub on Ross hosted a Black History Month Extravaganza

What a moment. I had the opportunity to film a 90 min. music special following banjo picking Earl Scruggs and his sons on the road to play with those they most admired. At the top of that list was Doc Watson. This scene was filmed with a single camera and a single microphone at Doc's home in North Carolina. To see these 2 magnificent musicians (and magnificent people) just sit down and pick some good bluegrass/country/mountain tunes was hard to sit there and film because I want to get up and move my body with their wonderful music.

I was so fortunate to get to make this film with Jimmy Doolittle, aviator, inventor, General, warrior, the man who led the famous Tokyo raid and the Doolittle Raiders in World War II. The war was not going well and what Doolittle and his men did was an attempt to change that. Of course the speaker is the 1964 Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. I collected these speeches back then because I was developing ideas for my 6 part television series, Making Sense of the Sixties. Barry Goldwater was defeated by Lyndon Johnson in that election. His conservative message did not resonate with the experiences most Americans were having back then. But when I re-examined this recently, much of what he is saying corresponds to what Republicans feel and what President Trump is expressing about America and what needs to change. The issues Goldwater raised include the American drift to the left and moral decay, crime, the morals of the young, political corruption, 1960s values, religious freedom, the state of the Supreme Court, and so much more. that resonates with how many Republicans feel and with President Tump's MAGA.

The speaker is Steve Allen, actor, comic, writer, musician, creator of The Tonight Show and so much more. The dialogue with him was recorded in 1989. He was a prolific talent on radio, TV, composed thousands of songs, acted in movies, wrote books, was a well-known science skeptic, and the all-around good guy. He is a cofounder of the Tonight Show where he had as guests many of the most famous folks of his time including Elvis Presley and Jerry Lewis. His second marriage was to Jayne Meadows. He died in 2000 after being bumped by another car which broke three of his ribs and caused internal bleeding at 78 years old. I was fortunate to have interviewed him for my TV series on the 1960s. He knew the depression era and the 1950s and was uniquely articulate in presenting his point of view. Search his name on my YouTube channel to find other clips from his interview.

I am very fortunate to know serial entrepreneur and master inventor Jay Walker and to have spent time in his magnificent library of the history of human imagination. As you will see in the video, this collection is extraordinarily broad and yet very precise–dinosaurs, space memorabilia, inventions, early Bibles, and original bill of rights, and so much more. As I say in my video, there are 2 kinds of people in the world. Collectors. And those who think collectors are insane. I am a collector. I hope that many viewers of this video also collectors and enjoy seeing what Jay Walker has collected. The library grows weekly as Jay spends a good portion of his time searching the world for new examples of human imagination as he defines it. He is generous and has students and historians and others visit the library on a regular basis, although it is connected to his home in Connecticut. Experts would say that it is one of the greatest private libraries in the world.

Lawrence Goyot was a great civil rights leader and back in 1964, an activist in Mississippi helping Black Americans to fill out all the forms so they could get the right to vote. I will be posting other clips from his interview, done by me in 1989, as a part of my 6 part PBS television series, Making Sense Of The Sixties. Back in the mid-sixties I did several films on the civil rights movement and the voter registration drive and found the black church totally supportive and many white churches equally supportive.

This is a clip from one of the films in my extensive archives of films from the 1950s and 1960s that I have collected over a 40 year period. They ran this film in junior high school and high school to teach children better eating habits. It probably did some good back then. I carefully selected each person who appeared based on their ability to articulate their experiences and also based on a judgment I made–were they “ordinary extraordinary” people as I described them.
